Single Speed Mountain Bikes
Single speed mountain bikes have just one speed - no gears - on the bike, allowing for a more rapid pedal rhythm to be achieved by the rider. However, as there are no gears on the bike, it is consequently more difficult to pedal up rough, mountainous terrain. Single gear mountain bikes allow for faster speeds to be achieved when moutain biking downhill, though, so the trade-off for a difficult ascent is paid off by an extremely swift, unencumbered ride down the biking trail.
